Hallo!

Ich habe versucht diesen Text auf Deutsch zu schreiben. Aber meine Sprachkenntnisse sind nicht genug. Ich kann dass nicht schaffen!

So, sorry for writing in English, but I have been told it is OK.
I have looked in here now and then and been impressed by the level of works and discussions. I would like to take part in this.
To introduce myself; this is one of my latest builds, finished last year. I like to do my own body shells, carved in wood.
Here we go!

Bild

Bild

I use lime-tree, also known as basswood (Linden auf Deutsch). For some detailing I use styrene.

Bild

Bild

I thought I might as well make a second one while I was on the go. These are very small and narrow cars, good to have a similar car to race against.
#1 is here gray primed, #2 will be a version without the streamline headrest.

Bild

While I am building them, I use a PCS chassis for testing. They will later get a scratch-built chassis and correct wheels.

Feel free to comment in English or ”auf Deutsch”, I can read better than I can write!

Thanks for looking, there is more to come.

Schnitzer

Hello Schnitzer aka "carver",
It is very nice to have your pretty handmade shells here in the forum. Most of us should have enough knowledge in English to understand at least your texts.
Your shells are really nice and I want to send you my respect that you finish your wooden shells as slot cars and don't make copies in resin in between. I've tried to carve shells out of wood myself and I have learned how demanding this material can be.
Best regards
Thomas

Hi Carver,

you are back ......welcome again !
What a wonderful restart here showing us this -Lotus eleven- project; It´s a fantastic racing car, without any compromises.
I would guess all measures for the bodywork are right in scale 1/32;
Do you intend to do some copies of a resine-mould ?

I am curious to see what´s coming next.......

vbr, claus

Hello, Thomas and Claus!

@Thomas regarding wood versus resin: I simply like working with wood better!

After having made a number of resin slush castings, I find that I do not have a good hand with this.
The shells never turn out as light and strong as my wooden bodies.
This is, of course, very personal. I realize, that for many of us, it is the other way around!

Also, the resin is pretty nasty stuff, I rather inhale wood dust than resin dust, if I have a choice...

@Claus: Just like you, I prefer the models to be right scaled. A small car should definitely look small and large cars look big...
I really do my best to get them right! But nobody is perfect...

I have not made any silicone molds from these cars, see above!

For the moment there is nothing new on the workbench, but there is always an everchanging list of cars waiting to be made...

I searched all around for a livery that would show up the beautiful shape of the streamliner.
I finally decided on Frank Baptista's white and blue car., that he raced in the USA.
This may not be one of the more well-known drivers but the car looks really good!

With PCS wire wheels, Ortmanns and an Immense driver, it turns out like this.

The simple wooden chassis, made of lollipop sticks works very well.

Hello -Carver -,

May be you have seen my -Maserati 3500 GT Sebring coupe`- here at the -Forum-.
Let me tell you my experience I made when using -balsa-wood material for the fist time on such a -project-.
I started work using balsa wood for base also. It´s the best to begin your -project- in analog manual work.
Use of -balsa-wood- it isn´t so easy as it seems to be. I could use it perfectly creating volume and outlines of the body design;
but to continue on the way to a -master- mould I would prefer -resine-material.
I like this this material which allows me to develop the mould showing all details of it´s coachwork.
I could not manage this when using balsa wood only.

By the way: it´s a pitty that you did not do a copy in -resine- material :( .............. bodies right in scale are so rare..........

First of all, Claus, I will never come close to the detailing level you show up! I am happy if the car can be recognized when running around the track!
All right, maybe a little more... :D

I quite agree with you, it is very difficult to make fine details when using balsa. And almost impossible to make panel lines cross-grain.
The material is simply too brittle and soft!
The harder lime tree I use makes all this much easier! Still, for some details (not much on this car, though) I have to take to styrene and silver thread.
I believe each scratch builder has to find out what is working and what you like, and it is always interesting to see how others go about it!
There are many ways to make a slot car body, for sure.

If I had made this Lotus in resin, I would gladly have sent you one, only for the joy to see it finished properly...

@ Lola, sticks chassis is not my idea, but I am glad to pass it on! Simple and cool, as you say, and also very cheap! You get a big bag for almost nothing.
A good thing is that if you drill the axle holes carefully, you don't need any bearings. Once run-in with a little oil they do not wear out!
Don't ask me why and how it works... :o

Regards
Schnitzer/Carver

#2 represents a more well-known car, ”the Yellow Peril”. First owned by Graham Hill, then sold on to Ian Walker who raced it in this shape.

Bild

To be equal to the first car it is built up much the same way, but with a tonneau made of thin styrene.

Thanks, guys!
@Thomas Dbg: I had a look in the big scale section. That early Mercedes is really eye-catching! Almost supernatural detailing...

Grüsse

Thanks for your kind comments!

I am experimenting with bottom weight to improve the handling. These are very small cars...
In the background, a sneak preview of an even smaller car, waiting for some ordered parts to arrive.

Cheers
